The principal holiday resort of
the Mediterranean is the lovely region of Antalya with a
majestic coastline of beaches and rocky coves where the
towering Toros (Taurus) Mountains provide a magnificent
backdrop. Antalya is an attractive city, at an altitude of
only about 50 metres, with shady, palm-lined boulevards, a
prize-winning marina and a picturesque old quarter called
Kaleici which has narrow, winding streets and quaint, old,
wooden houses next to the city walls. Since its founding in
the 2nd century B.C. by Attalus II, a king of Pergamon who
named the city Attaleia after himself, it has had a
continuous history. The Romans, Byzantines and Seljuks
occupied the city before it came under Ottoman rule.

Perge
Antique city
The Hittites had settlements in this area around 1500 B.C.,
and St. Paul stopped here on one of his jour- neys during
the time when Perge (18 km from Antalya) was an important
city of ancient Pamphylia. The stage of the theatre has very
nice marble relief work. On the outer wall is a three-sectioned
memorial fountain. Some of the reliefs from the city are
displayed in the stadium for easy viewing. Other ruins worth
mentioning are the handsome city gate flanked by two lofty
towers, a long colonnaded street that was once lined with
shops and mosaic pavements, a large agora, and buildings
that used to house the baths and gymnasium.

Termessos Antique City
Termessos, an ancient city about 30 minutes from Antalya has
witnessed thousands of years of history. The remains of city
are on top of the mountain in the Tauruses and is cooler
than Antalya, burning under summer sun. Once you get there
you have to climb about 2 km (1.4 miles) following the King
Road. The ruins are mostly hidden in bushes and trees. And
since it was one of the biggest capitals of the ancient
times it is widely dispersed. The biggest surprise of the
site is the theater one can reach following a small path in
the bushes. The theater located on top of the hill shines
grey under the sun, offers an eagle's eye view of the valley
below. The rocky grey of the mountains in the background
mixes to the green of the pine forests.

Antalya
Archaelogical Museum
This Museum is one of the best Archaeological Museums in the
world, indeed it is a prize winner. Here a collection of
fossils, from Stone to Bronze age, costumes, arts and crafts
can be seen. There are a collection of Statues of gods, (Gods
Gallery), there are 15 statues depicting Gods such as Zeus
and the Goddess Aphrodite. Mosaic pavements, jewellery,
Carpets, Ottoman rooms and nomadic tents are all on display
at this large Museum

Kursunlu
and Duden Waterfalls
The Kursunlu is a waterfall which is reduced to a mere
trickle in the summer months. It is located 19 km from
Antalya at the end of a 7 km road branching off to the north
of the Antalya-Serik-Alanya highway at a point 12 km from
Antalya. The waterfall is on one of the tributaries of the
Aksu river and its location in the midst of a pine forest is
of quite exceptional beauty. The countryside around the
waterfall is a lovely picnic and pleasure spot only twenty
minutes from the centre of Antalya.
Duden Waterfall is located 10 km from the city centre, part
of the Duden River which is one of the major rivers in
Southern Anatolia. Here the Waterfalls cascade among the
lush vegetation. An ideal place to relax and get away from
the city, just by travelling a few kilometres.
